The Outer Hebrides: Moor and Machair

Stewart Angus

Moor and Machair is a new natural history of the terrestrial habitats, plants, birds and animals of the Outer Hebrides - Lewis, Harris, the Uists and Benbecula, and Barra, with their outliers. It includes detailed treatment of the machair, the unique flower-rich grassland of the Atlantic seaboard. it is a sequel to The Shaping of the Islands, dealing with geology, landform and climate, which was published by the White Horse Press in 1997, and marries scientific rigour with local detail, making it equally relevant to serious students in the field and interested observers.

Moor and Machair 'marks an important milestone in our scientific knowledge of the Western Isles.'
Professor D.B.A. Thompson, Scottish Natural Heritage

Stewart Angus, a native Lewisman, was for five years Area Manager for Scottish Natural Heritage for the whole of the Western Isles. He is now specialist adviser on coastal ecology in Scottish Natural Heritage, and is an authority on machair.
